Room Locks
Internal security and privacy
Room fasteners restrict access to areas within your home. These locks are not nearly as elaborate as external locks but are effective as a childproofing measure, as additional security for an important space or simply as a way to guarantee privacy. Room locks are also important for safety and security in hotels and dormitories. When you’re staying away from your home safety experts advise that you keep your room secured at all times, whether you’re in it or not.
Types of Room Locks
Room locks are available in many of the same formats as regular door locks. Some of these devices may require keys, while others can be purchased in keyless versions. However, room locks are generally not available in a deadbolt model.
If you’re simply looking for privacy you can get something as basic as a hook and catch or pin that secures the door from the inside. These locks have a simple design: securing a catch pin in a hook or sliding a pin into a casing that’ll keep the door latched closed. These locks are easily broken, but, if security isn’t your primary concern, you can save a lot of money by using these locking systems.
Childproofing
You can also use simple hooks and latches for childproofing. The key to this type of system is to keep it up high where little fingers can’t work the lock. If you’re concerned that your child might be able to get through one of these simpler systems, there are specific childproof locks that you can purchase. These will usually be a key or combination lock that provides access only to adults.
When you childproof your home with room locks you have to remember that kids are smart and will probably eventually figure out a way to get into the spaces they want to. Childproofing isn’t a way to supervise your child – it’s simply a way to help prevent your child from accessing an area you don't want them in.
Security
When it comes to internal home security, rooms are often locked because they contain valuables or important personal information that needs to be kept secure. Some of these rooms include: cold storage spaces for fur coats, closets that contain jewelry and other valuables and offices that contain a lot of expensive and personally valuable electronics and information.
Security locks will be more elaborate then privacy or childproofing devices. They’ll usually be a key, a pushbutton or electronic lock. You may even find fingerprint locks when severely restricted access is desired.
There are a ton of choices when selecting a door lock for your rooms, so you should shop around to make sure that the one you purchase will meet your needs.
