Trailer Locks
A frequently overlooked necessity
Whether you’re looking to protect a favorite toy that you store on a trailer or you’re looking to secure the trailer itself, a trailer lock is the best way to provide that extra little bit of security you need.
A lot of people overlook the need for a trailer lock because they think that it’s too large and difficult to steal, especially if it’s attached to a vehicle. This is actually the opposite of how a thief sees the situation – what’s easier then hooking up to something on wheels and carting it away?
Even if it’s secured to a vehicle or has one parked in front of it, it’s completely possible to maneuver your trailer around obstacles and down the road. The simple fact is that a trailer is designed for you to conveniently move it about and the same is true for someone who’s considering taking it from you.
A Number of Options
There are a variety of different types of trailer locks available. Some will secure the trailer itself while others are designed to protect the contents. You can also combine your lock with a sensor alarm that’ll let you know if someone is creeping around your wheels.
If you’re in the market for a trailer lock, consider:
- Tongue locks:prevents the trailer from being attached to a hitch
- Wheel locks: anchors your trailer wheels in one spot and makes it so that the trailer can’t move
- Trailer door locks: key or combination locks that secure the door to your trailer shut
- Cable locks can attach your trailer to a vehicle, be wrapped around a tongue so that it can’t be used or simply secure your trailer to a permanent anchor
- Trailer safety lock: secures your trailer to your vehicle and makes it so that you can’t remove it from the hitch without a key or combination
How to Choose
The key to selecting the right trailer lock is to make sure it’s visible. That way it’s acting not only as a security measure, but also as a theft deterrent. Most thieves aren’t going to bother with something that’s going to offer them obvious difficulties.
There are a number of different ‘invisible locks’ available for your trailer. They sit subtly within the tongue or are hidden in the wheels. The problem with this type of lock is they don’t let a thief know that it’s not worth their time to mess with your trailer. This means that they may still attempt to get their hands on it and cause damage to it in the process. Visible trailer locks let everyone know that you’ve got all your possessions protected.
