Cable Locks
Easy to use
Cable locks are one of the most commonly used portable locks. They come in a number of different styles, each designed to suit a particular need.
How Cable Locks Work
Cable locks are extremely simple to operate. Most of them are made out of a number of galvanized steel threads that twist together inside a thick vinyl coated tube. Some will fasten with a combination device while others will be used in conjunction with a padlock. You can choose between a combination and a key version.
Portable Convenience
Cable locks are popular with travelers because they’re easy to transport, especially if you choose a combination model and don’t have to mess around with a key.
The mechanisms themselves are lightweight and the cable is flexible. The flexibility of the cable makes it easy to pack. In fact, you can also wrap it around yourself (on a wrist, leg or waist) or on a part of the item you intend to lock up (bike handle, laptop) if you don’t have anywhere else to store it.
Are They Really Safe?
Many people are hesitant to trust a cable lock to secure their possessions. However, these devices are designed to resist vandalism or attempted theft. The cable itself is made up of steel wires braided together, which means that it’s almost impossible to saw through and you won’t be able to break it by hand. Even the tubing that surrounds the steel is meant to stand up to attempted cutting or slicing.
If you choose one of the combination models, you’re opting for less durability and security than if you get a padlock. The single mechanism found on the combination models has been shown to snap under pressure. This is especially true if you position the lock so that a thief can put it on the ground and use a hammer or crow bar.
The padlock model is a little more reliable, both in combination and key form, because the lock itself is more difficult to break. However, you’ll still have to take precautions to reinforce the fastening capabilities of the cable lock.
Increasing Security
The best way to increase the durability and reliability of your cable lock is to take the time to position it securely. Wrap the cable closely around the object you’re securing so that it’s difficult for a thief to get any leverage against the device.
Furthermore, while it might be a little inconvenient for you, make sure that the lock itself is difficult to get at. A thief is looking for the quickest and easiest way to grab something and if they have to take a lot of time to pick the lock or access the mechanism they may just move on.
If you pay attention to the ways in which you use a cable lock, you’ll find it a reliable source of security for all your portable needs.
