Key Locks

Traditional technology

Most residential locks are key models – they function with the use of a particular key that allows a latch or bolt to be moved to fasten or unlock a door. There are a number of different kinds of key locks. They can be quite simple and work in a door knob, but they can also be very quite elaborate. The most common types of key locks are:

  • Pin tumbler locks
  • Deadbolt locks

These are commonly used to secure both external and internal doors, as well as windows and sliding doors. You might also find pin-tumbler locks used in safety devices like cabinet and refrigerator locks.

Key-Lock Accessories

When it comes to key models, the name of the game is convenience. Keys are easy to use and are convenient because you can make copies of the keys.

You can also make it easy for yourself to use a keyed security device. Accessories like key lock boxes allow you to keep spare keys accessible. Whether you want to allow cleaning services or real-estate agents access to your home, or whether you’re just looking for a safe way to store a spare key, these boxes are secured by a combination and keep your key safe from any unauthorized people.

Make Your Keys Work For You

Key locks also happen to be one of the easiest types to pick. It’s not difficult to imitate the key itself, using either a ‘jiggler key’ that can fit into a number of devices or a lock pick and tension wrench.

While the fact that key locks are relatively easy to pick is something to keep in mind when you’re choosing a security device, you shouldn’t overlook them as a viable option. Locks themselves are a great crime deterrent because most thieves won’t take the time required to pick them. However, there are a number of things you can do to make your key lock more secure and reliable:

  • Use a deadbolt. Most door-knob locks are too easily picked and a deadbolt might require just a little too much effort for thieves or other unfavorables to bother with.
  • Keep your home well lit. If there’s a chance that they might get spotted, most criminals won’t bother attempting to enter your home. They like things quick and easy, and the fact that anyone could get an eyeful of them messing around with your door might keep them away.
  • Don’t hide spare keys around your home. You might think that your spot is a great secret, but most thieves are able to figure out where you’re keeping your key. Unless you have your key secured in a key lock box, chances are the wrong person may find it. Instead, give a copy of your key to a trusted neighbor so that if you lock yourself out you still have a spare.
  • Keep the door locked. Any kind of lock is useless if you don’t use it. Some thieves will go around just trying doors to see if they’re secured. Don’t be an easy victim!

Key locks utilize some of the most tried and true technology that’s available to keep your home safe – use them wisely and they’ll be all the security you need!
