Locksmiths
Your best security
Locksmiths can both install and break locks. As well, locksmiths can help you choose the best security measure for your needs, and they can also unlock a lock if you’ve lost your key or forgotten your combination.
A Skilled Trade
Locksmithing is a specific vocation that involves the practice of a number of different skills. It certainly involves more then a little lock picking! A locksmith is expected to be able to:
- Make keys for both contemporary and antique locks
- Install and release locks
- Re-pin or re-key existing locks
- Hand cut keys
- Understand a variety of different locking systems
Locksmiths are usually called when someone has locked themselves out of their home or car. This means that the locksmith not only has to be able to get through the lock, but they also have to be able to determine whether or not the person who has called is the actual property owner.
Most importantly, a locksmith needs to be trustworthy. Customers are requesting that a locksmith actually break into a place that is secured by a lock, so the customer must feel confident in the fact that this person can be trusted with this type of personal-security and/or home-security information. This means that locksmithing involves both technical skills and social skills.
Most of the time a locksmith will be working with a key lock. Locksmiths are able to release the locking mechanism by inserting a pick and manipulating the pins that keep the latch or bolt plugged in place. If the key is missing the locksmith may re-key the lock by changing the ways the pins react.
A locksmith will also be called if a lock is jammed. They’ll take the locks apart and replace any worn parts, like pins or wheels.
Locksmiths may also act as security specialists. They can design, install and manage keyless locks with codes or computer surveillance.
For a keyless model a locksmith needs to be able to reset codes in case a combination is forgotten. Locksmiths must also be able to override computer or electrical systems in case of technical difficulties or a security breach.
