Locks, Safes and Security

Marc Weber Tobias’ guide to lock security

Marc Weber Tobias argues that any lock can be picked with the right tools and the right information. In his 1400 page reference book, Locks, Safes and Security: An International Police Reference , Tobias proves how unreliable all those little gadgets we trust to secure our possessions and ourselves really are.

Tobias’ text is a comprehensive review of the failings of almost every type of lock imaginable. The accompanying CD-ROMs offer video of the mechanisms being picked and detailed seminars on where the weaknesses lie.

The amount of information you’re exposed to will depend on which version of the text you purchase: government versions have 14 CD-ROMs, locksmithing versions have six and alarm versions have four. However, the government and alarm versions are only available to law enforcement and defense officials. They’re meant primarily to assist legal professionals in the investigation of crime.

What You’ll Find

Tobias covers a lot of ground in Locks, Safes and Security . While he certainly proves the vulnerability of even the most high-tech locks and security systems, he also offers a lot of preventative information valuable to law enforcement, locksmiths and consumers. Tobias discusses:

  • Common weaknesses in security procedures
  • Faults and failings in different security systems
  • Tools used to pick locks and circumvent security systems
  • Procedures used to compromise locks and security systems
  • Ways to protect locks and security systems and increase security

What You’ll Learn

Tobias’ text is an important resource for any home or business owner. In this book you’ll learn that no matter how much you spend you still need to take precautions to keep your security measures reliable and effective

Most people rely on locks as their primary source of security. Tobias proves that many of these can be picked in a matter of seconds, even by someone who has no experience with them. The real shocking part is that you can make your lock picking tools out of the most ordinary household items. You’ll see the truth in the saying that ”locks keep honest people honest” after you’ve seen how easy it can be to pick them!

However, Tobias doesn’t suggest that locks and security systems aren’t a worthwhile solution to property protection. The presence of locks or any type of security will deter most criminals who are looking for the quickest and easiest way to get their hands on your stuff. The more time and effort it takes a criminal to get in, the less likely they are to try. So, while Tobias explains that if someone really wants to get around a lock they can, he also indicates that locks are still a great investment.
